Key Word Sign, Gesture and Non-Verbal Communication

At Thames Speech and Language, I support children, adults and their communities to use unaided AAC (communication methods that do not rely on speech or devices), such as key word signing, gesture and non-verbal expression.

This approach can strengthen understanding, reduce frustration and create more confident communication. It is especially helpful for people with communication delays, disabilities, or anyone who benefits from extra visual support. Unaided AAC can be used alongside spoken language and alongside aided communication systems.

My goal is not simply to teach signs, but to help families, educators and support networks feel confident using gesture and key word signing in everyday life, at home, in early learning settings, at school and out in the community.
I offer workshops, consultations and practical coaching to support teams to grow their skills together, so communication becomes more inclusive, responsive and connected.

My Key Word Sign experience

In Aotearoa New Zealand, I use New Zealand signs, however I learned Makaton during my speech-language therapy training and have continued to develop my skills in unaided AAC throughout my career.

I have been a member of Key Word Sign Australia (KWSA) since 2014, delivering workshops and professional development across Australia. I am currently a consultant with KWSA and remain actively involved in supporting training and resource development in this area.
